| Special Purpose Machine Tools !! NO longer available !! The remit is often to provide machines to suit a particular need based on modular proven machine elements.Typically examining the customer problem and providing a cost effective design solution normally including ,methodology with an outline design, build costs and delivery schedule. For example: Production design & manufacture Simultaneous machining the end spigots of a AC induction motor with stator winding already inserted Solution economical 2+2, 5 axis lathe complete with mandrill part holding Another example: Research Machine for UK defence Industry The requirement was to conduct work on spherical components which are initially digitised. A solution could have been adapted using a 2 axis tilt and rotary table however when this technique is applied the tilt axis moves away from the centre line making it difficult to translate the co-ordinated data. Result from digitising is prone to errors as moves are not normal to component/probing machine plane. A solution to the problem was achieved by designing the sector swing in the vertical plane using a radial linear guideway arrangement. The guideway supported a carriage with vertical ballscrew travel coupled to a fanuc servo. The component was mounted onto a rotary table beneath the carriage enabling orthogonal axis control of a sphere through axes Z (vertical plane),C (radial tilt) and B rotary. A typical pennine design & build project. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
